Almost everyone asks the same thing before a first tattoo: does it hurt? The honest answer is yes, a bit. Most people describe it as manageable, and much less scary than they imagined. How much it hurts depends on the body part, the style, the length of the session and how rested you are.
What a tattoo actually feels like
People usually describe it as a repeated scratching, stinging or burning feeling, with a light vibration from the machine. The first few minutes are often the sharpest, then your body adjusts. In long sessions the skin gets more sensitive, so pain can build towards the end.
Pain by body part
These are general patterns, not rules. Everyone's skin is different.
Usually easier:
- Outer upper arm and shoulder
- Outer thigh
- Calf
- Upper back
Usually more sensitive:
- Ribs and spine, where the skin is thin over bone
- Ankles, feet and the top of the foot
- Inner elbow and the back of the knee
- Collarbone and sternum
- Fingers, hands and wrists
- Neck and head
Fleshy places tend to be easier. Bony places, thin skin and areas with many nerve endings tend to sting more.
What changes how much it hurts
- Sleep and food: a tired, hungry body feels pain more.
- Stress: tension makes everything feel sharper. Slow breathing helps.
- Session length: a one-hour piece is a different experience from a five-hour one.
- Style: a small fine line tattoo is usually quicker and lighter than shaded or colour work that needs repeated passes.
- Your own skin: some people barely notice it, others find it harder.
How to make your first tattoo easier
- Eat a proper meal and drink water before you come.
- Sleep well the night before.
- Skip alcohol for a day. It thins your blood and can make you bleed more.
- Wear loose clothes that let the artist reach the spot easily.
- Bring water and a small snack for longer sessions.
- Breathe slowly and keep the area still.
- Say so when you need a break. Nobody is timing you.
What about numbing cream?
Ask your artist before you use any. Some creams can change how the skin takes ink, and not every studio is comfortable with them. A good artist will tell you what they prefer.
How it feels afterwards
Expect the area to feel sore, a bit like mild sunburn, for a few days. Good aftercare makes the soreness settle faster, so read our tattoo aftercare and healing timeline before your appointment.
