What is a cover-up tattoo, and can yours be covered?
A cover-up is a new tattoo designed to hide an old one. Because the old ink is still in your skin, the new design has to be bigger, darker and busier than what it covers. A light, faded or simple tattoo is far easier to hide than a dark, thick or heavily shaded one.
Cover-ups are a regular part of the work at the studio. The first step is always a clear photo, because the honest answer depends on what is already there: how dark it is, how big, and whether the skin is raised or scarred.
- Usually possible Faded tattoos, small or simple old tattoos, outlines without heavy fill, and pieces you are happy to have reworked into something larger.
- Harder Dark, thick or solid black tattoos, and old work that is much bigger than the new design you have in mind.
- Be realistic A cover-up will not be a copy of the tattoo you originally wanted. It is a new design built around what is already there.

How does a cover-up tattoo work?
1. Send a daylight photo
Take a sharp photo in natural light, flat on, with a coin or ruler for size. Add a second one from the side if the area curves.
2. Honest assessment
We tell you what can be hidden, what can only be reworked, and when it is smarter to wait. Laser lightening is done by clinics, not by us, but for very dark pieces it can make a cover-up easier, so we will say if we think it is worth asking about.
3. A design built around the old tattoo
We draw the new piece to sit over the old one, using shape, shading and placement to hide it. You approve the drawing before we start.
4. Session and healing
Cover-ups take more time than a fresh tattoo of the same size. Healing is the same as any tattoo, and we explain aftercare at the end of the session.

Cover-up Tattoo Questions
Can any old tattoo be covered?
Not every one. Many can be hidden or reworked, but very dark or thick tattoos may need a large, dark design, or some lightening first. Send a clear photo and we tell you straight.
Will my old tattoo show through the new one?
A well-planned cover-up should not show the old design, but dark old ink can sometimes be faintly visible in light areas. That is why cover-ups lean towards darker, denser designs.
Does a cover-up need to be bigger?
Usually yes. A new design that is larger than the old tattoo hides the edges much better than one of the same size.
Should I try creams or home remedies first?
No. Creams and home remedies do not lighten tattoos reliably and can irritate the skin. If you want lightening, see a laser clinic or a dermatologist.
