Lots of people live with a tattoo they no longer like: a name, a first attempt, or a design that has faded and blurred. A cover-up can turn it into something you are proud of, but it only works when the new design is planned around the old one.
How a cover-up works
A cover-up is a new tattoo designed to hide an old one. Because the old ink is still in your skin, the new design has to be bigger, darker and busier than what it covers. That is why a cover-up is rarely smaller than the original.
What is easy to cover
- Light, faded or thin tattoos.
- Simple designs with little shading.
- Small tattoos with room around them for a larger design.
- Older tattoos where the ink has already softened.
What is harder to cover
- Dark, thick or heavily shaded tattoos.
- Large solid black areas.
- Very recent tattoos that have not fully healed.
- Tattoos with scar tissue or uneven skin.
Some people lighten a dark tattoo first with laser treatment at a specialist clinic, which gives more design options. That is a medical treatment, so ask a qualified professional about it. The American Academy of Dermatology says in a news release that whoever does the laser work should be, in dermatologist Marie Leger’s words, “extremely skilled in using lasers,” and that clearing a tattoo usually takes repeated sessions spaced weeks apart.
Designs that hide old tattoos well
- Dense florals and leaves with strong dark areas.
- Black and grey work with shading that breaks up the old shapes.
- Mandalas and geometric designs with bold, repeated detail.
- Animals, birds and wings with texture such as feathers or fur.
- Custom pieces drawn around the old tattoo. See our custom tattoo designs.
Light colours cannot hide dark ink. Dark colours and strong contrast do the work.
Cover-up or rework?
A cover-up hides the old design completely. A rework keeps part of the old tattoo and improves it, for example by fixing shaky lines or adding shading. If you like some of the original, ask about a rework.
What to send an artist
For an honest answer, send:
- A clear photo of the tattoo in daylight, with no filter.
- The body part and roughly how big the tattoo is.
- How old it is, if you know.
- What you would like instead, or what you want to avoid.
A good artist will tell you plainly whether it can be hidden, how big the new design needs to be and what style suits it. That is how we handle it on our cover-up tattoo in Vadodara page.
What does a cover-up cost?
It depends on the size and detail of the new design, which is usually larger than the original. We quote after seeing a photo. For general ranges, read our tattoo price guide.
